You’ve heard people talking about it… You’ve seen it all over social media and now it’s popping up on the Corefit schedule.
But what exactly is it??
By definition Hyrox is an endurance fitness race that combines functional exercise with running: a 1 kilometer run followed by a workout station- repeated 8 times. At its completion participants will have run a total of 8 kilometers and worked 8 different strength training exercises. It is designed to test your endurance and challenge both the novice and professional by performing strength based movements while simultaneously fatiguing the muscles and testing your aerobic capacity.
While Hyrox itself is an actual race that takes place in over 11 countries and 30 cities worldwide, you do not need to compete in any of the official events to reap the benefits of training. The classes you see on our schedule are specifically designed to train your body and improve overall physical fitness at any level. There are four different program designs that you will see incorporated into our classes- each with a varying degrees of intensity and focus.
Foundational classes work in an interval format- developing strength, power, aerobic endurance and agility. These classes are perfect for all fitness levels and provide a thorough total body workout.
Hyrox Engine classes target peak performance- testing high impact cardio fatigue through creative conditioning exercises. You can expect higher repetitions and longer distances on various machines (think Versa Climber or rower) to improve stamina and speed.
Power classes focus more on traditional strength training movements and exhaust the muscles more so than the cardiovascular endurance challenged in other classes. This format is great for all levels and you may find the AMRAP, Tabata, EMOM and partner workouts somewhat familiar to the CoreFit programs you’re used to.
The Hyrox Complete class is perhaps the most comprehensive- providing the most well rounded workout that prepares your body for the unique demands of the race. Both cardiovascular and muscular resilience are fatigued and your ability to perform under duress is tested to improve overall Hyrox skills and abilities.
While this new concept may seem a bit intimidating, many of the Hyrox movements are recognizable exercises frequently incorporated into our typical CoreFit programming. Sled pushes and pulls, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls and the Skierg are all part of the Hyrox race and (most are) adaptable to the WOD room you already know and love. While anything new is challenging at first, the camaraderie, support and community of the sport is something already well embodied in the studio.
At CoreFit we are always looking for ways to push our bodies in safe and effective ways. The competitive edge and challenge of Hyrox is a perfect compliment to the intentional, strength building programs we build and teach already. We love to see our members try new things and test their limits while under the safe guidance of certified professionals and in an environment that is welcoming, supportive and empowering.
Our goal is always to build strong bodies and minds in each and every person that walks through our doors. We are super excited to offer these new classes and hope you are both inspired and encouraged to give them a try!
