Our bodies ability to move in its full ranges of motion absolutely affects the way we show up in our life. When it becomes hard to move a certain way or do a certain task- we struggle, we experience pain and it hinders all that we are able to do and accomplish.
It is completely debilitating and frustrating to be held back by our inability to move in the way that we want!
The truth of it is, when it comes to mobility it’s use it or lose it. The less you move the worse it gets, and in a culture that prioritizes convenience and simplicity not a whole lot of movement is even required anymore in our day to day. Without even realizing it we’ve reduced our movement to a single workout at the gym or a quick walk outside. And while these things are amazing and should be part of our daily routine, it’s the continuous movements we make throughout the day, while performing daily activities, that really do matter!
Taking our joints through their full range of motion- getting up off the floor, picking up our kids or grandkids, reaching for that jar on the top shelf or even stabilizing ourselves from a fall are crucial to staying active, healthy and agile. Our bodies are incredibly adaptable – conforming to its environment and daily use, which works as much to our benefit, when effectively conditioning daily mobility movements, as it does to our detriment when we become sedentary and inactive. Of course as we age there will be some natural muscle loss and our bones will change, but we have the ability to literally slow that process down, extending our bodies ability to move for years to come!
Incorporating mobility training into your daily routine is not only beneficial for your future health, but will also help protect against injuries and optimize your performance at the gym. Being able to move effectively will ensure that you are squatting deeper, jumping higher and accessing proper form during strength training. Mobility work goes hand in hand with your workouts and is the key to helping you reach optimal health and ability.
Taking the time to properly stretch and warm up before your workout, getting a proper cool down and adding some yoga to your weekly routine will make a huge difference. When you are intentional about incorporating different movements throughout your day- think extra walking, playing with your kids, dancing, whatever it may be!- your body will thank you ????
