Do’s and Don’ts of Holiday Eating

We are entering the thick of it- that time of year where there are inconsistent schedules, lack of routine, parties every weekend and an abundance of ALL the desserts, cookies, drinks and more.

And honestly… it’s a wonderful time of year. Bring.it.on!

But if you find yourself approaching these months a little hesitant and stressed about handling it all, rest assured that you do not have to throw all your aspirations out the window just because it’s the holidays.

You don’t have to cave to the culturally accepted norm of giving up and not even trying this time of year because the “why bother anyway” or “I’ll just start January 1st” mentality.

Of course there is going to be some disruption to your schedule, and of course there are going to be some things completely out of your control that you’ll have to make the best of, but by making a few intentional choices throughout the day you absolutely have the capacity and strength to continue working towards your goals, prioritizing your health and not letting yourself completely derail just because you let loose a little during the this special time of year.

To enjoy the holiday season without losing all control and feeling set back before the new year even starts, here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind as you navigate the weeks to come:

Do get some movement in. Even if it’s not your normal workout- get outside for a short walk, do a quick bodyweight workout or stretch. It does wonders for your body and your mindset.

Do plan ahead. Decide beforehand which events or meals you’re going to indulge in and make sure you get some other adequate nutrients and protein throughout the day. Simple carbs are delish but they are always going to leave you crashing and craving for more shortly after. Regulate those cravings and blood sugar spikes with some protein, healthy fats and fiber throughout the day.

Don’t be so consumed by calorie amounts or guilt that you don’t allow yourself to experience and enjoy the special time of year.

Don’t starve yourself during the day to accommodate a big meal later in the day. You will inevitably feel sick by the end of it and not even able to enjoy the rest of the night or the desserts you were really looking forward to! Sad!

Don’t have an all or nothing mentality. Just because you had some things you normally wouldn’t or ate more than normal, doesn’t mean you have to continue in that for days and weeks to come. Enjoy your things and get back to your normal eats the next day.

Do focus on getting protein, veggies and fiber throughout the day- even when you’re out at an event. There are SO many delicious protein and veggie options that will keep you satiated, full and not craving sugars and carbs shortly after.

Don’t categorize food as “good” or “bad”. Food isn’t “good” or “bad” but rather a choice of what you want to eat for you, your health and your goals. There should never be shame or guilt around your food choices, but rather a sense of empowerment for making the choices that work best for you at that moment.

Don’t be guilted into making a particular choice or requesting an option that suits what you want or need at that moment. Never feel bad about making the choices that are good for your mental and physical health. The family and peer pressure is real- but so is your self-empowerment.

And the most important one of all:

Do be fully present and enjoy the festivities- the food, the company, the memories…. All of it!

There is a lot of emphasis put on the food during the holiday season, but please remember it is SO much more than that. It is tradition and memories and time with family, friends and loved ones. Truly take some time to relax, recharge and enjoy the magic of the season and know that when you are ready to come back to some routine, encouragement and butt-kicking workouts 😉- our doors will be open and ready! See you then!
